The best designs secure the component at the axle or clamp, rather than adding a loose accessory around it. A locking skewer takes the place of the original quick-release axle. On a matching seat lock, the system prevents a thief from opening the seatpost clamp and lifting out the saddle and post.
Many quality systems use a proprietary key and a pin-tumbler locking design. The key aligns internal pins so the locking head can turn for removal. Without the correct key, the head is intentionally difficult to grip, rotate, or defeat with common hand tools. The goal is not visual deterrence alone. The mechanism needs to deny leverage and deny access to a standard release point.

They are less critical for a bike that is never left unattended, stored inside a private residence, or built with non-removable solid axles and no quick-release seat clamp. Even then, assess the actual hardware. Many bikes use a mix of axle types and seat clamps, so one protected component does not automatically protect the rest.
Compatibility Is the Part You Cannot Skip
Do not buy a security skewer based on wheel size alone. Wheel size does not determine skewer fit. The important details are axle type, dropout spacing, and the usable axle length required by your frame and hub.
Traditional quick-release wheels typically use a skewer passing through a hollow hub axle. Front and rear assemblies are different lengths, and the rear must account for the wider rear dropout spacing. A security skewer needs to match that application exactly. Ordering a front lock for a rear wheel is not a minor inconvenience. It will not fit correctly.
Thru-axle bikes require a different solution. Many modern road, gravel, mountain, and e-bike platforms use threaded thru-axles rather than quick-release skewers. Never force a security component onto an incompatible axle.

A component-level security plan only works when every lock matches the way that specific component is held in place.
Installation: Secure Fit Beats Quick Installation
A locking skewer should be installed with the same care as any wheel-retention hardware. Remove the original skewer while keeping the wheel seated in the dropouts. Insert the security skewer through the hub, fit the retaining hardware, and tighten it according to the manufacturer's instructions. The wheel must sit straight and the axle must be firmly clamped.

After installation, lift the bike slightly and check that the wheel has no side-to-side movement. Spin it to confirm that disc rotor or rim-brake alignment has not changed.
Keep the key where it is available when you need to remove a wheel, but not on a key ring that is routinely left with the bike. A lost key should be an inconvenience, not a reason to cut off a correctly installed lock.
What Security Skewers Cannot Protect

Use security skewers as part of a layered setup. Lock the frame to a fixed object with a high-quality lock. Position the bike so the lock is not resting on the ground where it can be attacked more easily. Then use locking skewers or axle locks to eliminate the easy wheel-removal route.
A rear wheel often deserves priority because it can include a cassette, rotor, and more costly hub components. But the front wheel is frequently the fastest target because it is easier to remove and carries lower risk for the thief. If both wheels are quick-release, protecting both is the practical answer. If your saddle is valuable or your seat clamp is quick-release, secure that too.

Security skewers are worth it when your bike has removable components and spends time at public racks. They add meaningful protection with little impact on daily riding, and they solve a theft vector that a frame lock alone does not address.
