College parking areas create the exact conditions thieves like most - predictable schedules, crowded racks, and long stretches when bikes sit unattended. If you lock only the frame, you are protecting only one part of what you paid for. Real protection means securing the components that disappear first.
Why bike security for campus parking is different
Campus parking is not the same as stopping at a coffee shop for ten minutes. A bike may sit outside for hours during class, work study, labs, or practice. That longer window changes the risk.
It also changes the kind of theft you need to plan for. On campus, quick-release wheels, seat posts, and saddles are obvious targets because they can be removed in seconds. A thief does not need a van or a dramatic cut-and-run. They need a moment when nobody is paying attention.

Protect the frame, yes. But protect the parts a thief can remove faster than you can finish class. That is how you keep a bike rideable, reliable, and where you left it.
